9 weeks of The Call · Preaching & Christian Studies: The Big Idea · Text to Sermon · Form · Structure · Illustration & Application …

The weeks are the course’s own, read from the lab; the catalog pads the last weeks with the capstone and the floor so the course fills a whole term.

The squares are a picture of a course — how much of each core subject its own rooms carry, read from the rooms’ text — never a score of a student. Every course in a lab is graded to the core across the board; the squares say which columns it feeds most.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO
  • A sermon “about grace” is like a store “about products.” A topic is a territory; an idea is a claim staked in it
  • You have the idea
  • The same Big Idea can be shaped three ways, and the shape decides whether the room is told, led, or taken
  • A sermon is a journey with rooms, not a list with Roman numerals

WK 1
The Big IdeaTHE PREACHER
A sermon “about grace” is like a store “about products.” A topic is a territory; an idea is a claim staked in it. This week you build the one sentence your whole sermon serves.
WK 2
Text to Sermon
You have the idea. Now the bridge from study to pulpit: three questions the text must answer before a room can receive it — and a purpose that names what should be DIFFERENT when you sit down.
WK 3
Form
The same Big Idea can be shaped three ways, and the shape decides whether the room is told, led, or taken. Form is not decoration — it is the route by which truth reaches people.
WK 4
Structure
A sermon is a journey with rooms, not a list with Roman numerals. This week you build the movements, write the doors between them, and earn the room’s attention in the first ninety seconds.
WK 5
Illustration & Application
An illustration is a window — it exists to let light onto the point, not to be admired. Application is the road home. This week you learn to source honestly and aim specifically.
WK 6
The Black Preaching Tradition
This week you study the tradition that made American preaching an art form — not as history appreciation, but as craft you will learn and use. It solved problems every preacher has.
WK 7
Delivery
You can build a perfect sermon and lose it in the delivery. The body is not the sermon’s packaging — it is part of the message. The strongest word in preaching is often the one you don’t say.
WK 8
The Calendar & The Occasions
One sermon is a skill; a preaching year is a stewardship. This week you feed a congregation a balanced diet across a calendar — and face the occasions where you get exactly one take.
WK 9
The Workshop
Nobody becomes a preacher by reading about preaching. Growth happens in one loop, run over and over: preach, watch your own tape, receive critique, revise, and preach again. This week you run it.
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The capstone · The Preacher
The question. What does The Preacher ask you to be able to do by week 9?
The make. Every week's assignment and the quiz as practice: The Big Idea · Text to Sermon · Form · Structure …
The evidence. Handed in through The Preacher inside The Call · Preaching & Christian Studies, kept in My Work; the Report reads it from there.

A course is a quarter, a semester or a year — nine, eighteen or thirty-six weeks — a project a quarter. Offered as the year, a semester or a quarter, it is the same course seen through a window. A lab is a family: its year, each of its tracks as a course, and its rooms. The evidence is what a student hands in through the room; the Report reads it from there. Nothing in the catalog is a grade.
