Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry
The ratio in a triangle taken all the way: the three ratios, the angle of elevation, the roof pitch and the miter, the laws that solve any triangle, the circle in radians, the sine wave you can hear — and functions as objects: notation, growth, radicals, the rational curve — ending at the average rate of change, where calculus begins.

MATHSCIENCEREADING & WRITINGTECHNOLOGY & TRADES
The squares are a picture of a course — how much of each core subject its own rooms carry, read from the rooms’ text — never a score of a student. Every course in a lab is graded to the core across the board; the squares say which columns it feeds most.
WHAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO
- Solve any right triangle with the trig ratios and any triangle with the laws of sines and cosines
- Work in radians and model a periodic phenomenon with a sine function
- Read and write function notation; model growth, decay and inverse-square behaviour from data
- Compute and interpret an average rate of change and a limit
AT A GLANCE · 36 WEEKS

Semester 1
WEEKS 1–18 · QUARTERS 1 AND 2The right triangle, all the way
WEEKS 1–9THE WEEKS · THE ROOMS EACH ONE OPENS
WK 1–3SOH CAH TOA
The three ratios; find a side; find an angle.
WK 4–7Elevation, pitch, miter
The Sun’s height from a shadow; the roof; the cut.
WK 8–9The section test
Twenty questions; Their Board.
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The Shadow Stick
The question. From one stick and one shadow: how high is the Sun at noon on four dates — and what does the tangent say the season is?
The make. The Shadow Stick — the build on the Science Floor, in The Ground: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The shadow-stick sheet with the Sun’s elevation by tangent on four dates, handed in through the Science Floor

WK 10–13The laws of sines and cosines
A triangle with no right angle, solved.
WK 14–16Radians and the sine wave
The circle measured by its own radius; the wave.
WK 17–18The section test
Twenty questions; Their Board.
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The Pangaea Jigsaw
The question. The Pangaea jigsaw: how far did the continents move — the distance across a sphere, by the law of cosines?
The make. The Pangaea Jigsaw — the build on the Science Floor, in the Design Desk: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The drift sheet with distances solved by the law of cosines and the angles in radians, handed in through the Science Floor

THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
One Bulb, Four Distances
The question. One bulb, four distances: does the light fall off as one over the square — and what function fits the four readings?
The make. One Bulb, Four Distances — the build on the Science Floor, in the Studio: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The brightness sheet with the inverse-square model fitted to four distances, handed in through the Science Floor

THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
A Wave You Can Stand Next To
The question. A wave you can stand next to: what sine function fits it — and what is its average rate of change over a quarter period, then over a smaller and smaller one?
The make. A Wave You Can Stand Next To — the build on the Science Floor, in the Movement Floor: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The wave sheet with the sine model and the shrinking average rates, handed in through the Science Floor

A course is a quarter, a semester or a year — nine, eighteen or thirty-six weeks — a project a quarter. Offered as the year, a semester or a quarter, it is the same course seen through a window. A lab is a family: its year, each of its tracks as a course, and its rooms. The evidence is what a student hands in through the room; the Report reads it from there. Nothing in the catalog is a grade.
