Geometry

The geometry a shop, a site and a court are made of: angles, circles, similarity, the right triangle, then trigonometry — the ratio in a triangle, the angle of elevation, the roof pitch, the miter — and the laws that solve any triangle. The builds are the optical bench, the shadow stick, the roof.

MATHSCIENCEREADING & WRITINGTECHNOLOGY & TRADES
The squares are a picture of a course — how much of each core subject its own rooms carry, read from the rooms’ text — never a score of a student. Every course in a lab is graded to the core across the board; the squares say which columns it feeds most.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO
  • Prove and use angle, circle and similarity relationships
  • Solve right triangles with Pythagoras and the trig ratios
  • Apply trigonometry to elevation, pitch and miter problems from the labs
  • Solve any triangle with the laws of sines and cosines
AT A GLANCE · 36 WEEKS
Q1 Angles, perimeter, area — The Optical Bench and the Normal Line
Q2 Similarity and the right triangle — Three views of a part
Q3 Trigonometry · the ratio in a triangle — The Shadow Stick

Semester 1

WEEKS 1–18 · QUARTERS 1 AND 2
Angles, perimeter, area
WEEKS 1–9 · IN THIS OFFERING
THE WEEKS · THE ROOMS EACH ONE OPENS
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The Optical Bench and the Normal Line
The question. Where does the beam go when it hits the mirror — and what does the normal line have to do with it?
The make. The Optical Bench and the Normal Line — the build on the Science Floor, in the Design Desk: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The optical-bench sheet with the angles measured and the law written, handed in through the Science Floor
MS-PS4-2HS-PS4-37.G
Similarity and the right triangle
WEEKS 10–18
THE WEEKS · THE ROOMS EACH ONE OPENS
WK 10–12
Similar shapes
Scale factors; the missing side.
WK 17–18
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
Three views of a part
The question. Can you draw a part so a stranger could make it — and prove the dimensions agree?
The make. A part drawn in three views at the Fab Shop with every diagonal checked by Pythagoras and every scaled copy by similarity
The evidence. The drawing and the check sheet, handed in through the Fab Shop craft

Semester 2

WEEKS 19–36 · QUARTERS 3 AND 4
Trigonometry · the ratio in a triangle
WEEKS 19–27
THE WEEKS · THE ROOMS EACH ONE OPENS
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The Shadow Stick
The question. How high is the Sun at noon in each season — from one stick and one shadow?
The make. The Shadow Stick — the build on the Science Floor, in The Ground: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The shadow-stick sheet with the Sun’s elevation computed by tangent for four dates, handed in through the Science Floor
MS-ESS1-1MS-ESS2-6HS-G
Any triangle · volume and surface
WEEKS 28–36
THE WEEKS · THE ROOMS EACH ONE OPENS
WK 32–34
Volume and surface
Prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres.
WK 35–36
THE PROJECT · WHAT THE QUARTER IS FOR
The Pangaea Jigsaw
The question. The Pangaea jigsaw: how far did the continents move, and what triangle gives the distance?
The make. The Pangaea Jigsaw — the build on the Science Floor, in the Design Desk: the number, the count, the sheet.
The evidence. The drift sheet with the distances solved by the law of cosines, handed in through the Science Floor
MS-ESS2-3HS-ESS1-5HS-ESS2-1HS-G

A course is a quarter, a semester or a year — nine, eighteen or thirty-six weeks — a project a quarter. Offered as the year, a semester or a quarter, it is the same course seen through a window. A lab is a family: its year, each of its tracks as a course, and its rooms. The evidence is what a student hands in through the room; the Report reads it from there. Nothing in the catalog is a grade.
